Martha is a New York boutique famed for the promotion and sale of French fashions. It was opened in 1934 by Martha Philipps and, after World War II, enjoyed great success. Later, suffering from competition from department stores, Philipps and her daughter, Lynne Manulis, attempted to promote new designers during the 1980s. However, in 1993 the woman referred to by the Wall Street Journal as “The grand dame of Manhattan couture,” was forced to close her store.
