Mario Portolano is an Italian glove company. It was launched in 1895 in Naples as a family-run enterprise, and it is now into its fourth generation. The company, which has its own high-quality brand and various lines in conjunction with different designers, haute couture and prêt-à-porter fashion houses, oversees all phases of the production cycle: from treating and dyeing the leather to the final stitching of the gloves. Skilled craftsmanship is combined with the quality of the materials and creativity of design.
The history of the brand
The history of this brand begins in Naples when Fortunato, Mario’s grandfather, founded the leather glove factory. His first-born son Alberto, always very enterprising, developed the glove factory and started the tannery and leather dyeing business, opening several stores in Rome and Naples. Mario then continues with enthusiasm what was the design of his father.
The forth generation
Since 1980 the brothers Mara, Stefano and Lucio Portolano represent the fourth generation that carries on the history of the brand of gloves. They joined the company in the era of Made in Italy, when foreign customers began to appreciate the taste, design and workmanship of Italian products, over the years, however, the market changes a lot and quickly, the large Italian manufacturing companies move their production in countries where the cost of labor is lower.
Historically, the company Mario Portolano decides to keep the production in Italy, looking for new materials for each season, more and more refined design, not an easy task because the workmanship has remained in the tradition of the past. Many collaborations with designers, who every year design new lines, in step with international fashion trends.
