Born Maria Louise Veronica Ciccone (1959). American pop star and actress, who also became a fashion inspiration for her young fans. In 1984 she capitalised on this by founding Madonna Wanna-Be, a clothing company aimed mainly at teenagers. Her look was unique, constantly pursuing a type of sexy sensationalism. She wore underwear as outerwear, with basques and cone-shaped brassieres. Typical features included high heels, a bare midriff, tight mini-skirts and lace tops with rigid cups. Of Italian origin, she has relatives in Pacentro, in the province of L’Aquila. Born in Detroit (Michigan), she abandoned her university studies to move to New York, where she worked as a model before becoming a singer. Among her most famous records are Madonna (1982), Like A Virgin (1985), which sold more than 5 million copies, Who’s That Girl (1987) and the soundtrack of the film Evita (1996). Her acting career began in 1985 with the film Desperately Seeking Susan and she married the actor Sean Pean, from whom she divorced in 1989. In 1990 she acted alongside Warren Beatty in Dick Tracy (the soundtrack is also hers). In 1996 she was nominated for an Oscar for Evita. Her daughter Maria Lourdes was born the same year. The father was her personal trainer, Carlos Leon.
