Madame Figaro

madame figaro

Mamame Figaro is a French weekly magazine for the readers of Figaro. Founded in 1980 as a monthly supplement to the daily newspaper, it began to be issued fortnightly from January 1983 and then weekly from September 1984. It averages 120 pages and covers food, shopping, fashion, celebrities, cinema, and literature, in line with the traditional model of women’s magazines. In 1980 it employed 5 journalists but by 1997 the team comprised almost 100 people. From its inception, it has been run by Marie Claire Pauwels. Its subtitle is “The weekly with sound values.” Thanks to its formula and intelligent journalism it has achieved popularity beyond France with various international editions: in Portugal (1988), Japan (1990), England (1993), Korea (1994) and Greece (1994). In 1996 it generated a new supplement entitled Maison Madame Figaro. After 20 years in charge, Marie Claire Pauwels is assisted by an editorial director, Anne Gilet. However, the management of the bi-monthly Maison Madame Figaro remains firmly in Pauwels’ control.
