THE BEGINNING OF LIU WEN’S CAREER

Liu Wen was born in Yongzhou, in the province of Hunan on the 27th of January 1988. By 2005 she won the New Silk Road World Model Competition and signed her first contract with the homonymous agency. In the same year the seventeen year old Liu Wen moved to Beijing and began her modeling career.

In a few years she managed to shoot with many brands such as Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Lowe and Bulgari, becoming one of the most prominent models of the moment. During 2007 she appeared on the cover of the Chinese edition of Cosmopolitan, while in 2008 she participated in the fashion weeks in New York, Paris, London and Milan. In the same year she walked the catwalks of Dior, Hermès, Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Burberry, Kenzo and Trussardi.

LIU WEN X VICTORIA’S SECRET

In 2009, Liu Wen walked the catwalk at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the first Chinese model to achieve this goal. The model walked the catwalk for the brand also in 2010, 2011, 2012 and then in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The other models who achieved this goal were Sui He and Ming Xi.

CONSOLIDATION OF LIU WEN’S IMAGE

In 2009, she walked the catwalk in New York, Milan, Paris and London, the only model to reach that number that year. In the same year Liu also worked for Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Roberto Cavalli, Oscar de la Renta, Hugo Boss, Alexander Wang, H&M, Marni, Lane Crawford, Bergdorf Goodman, Diesel and Gap. The model’s fame continued to grow, and in the same year she appeared in the editions of Vogue in Germany, Spain, China, Italy and America. Moreover she also worked with Numéro, GQ, V magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Pop Magazine, Allure, i- D and Interview.

OTHER COLLABORATIONS

In 2010 she worked with Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo and Givenchy. In September, she participated in 48 fashion shows held in New York, Paris and Milan. She participated in Tom Ford’s show, she opened Alexander Herchcovitch’s fashion show and closed it for Christophe Lemaire. In 2012 she worked with Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss and she became Estée Lauder’s testimonial, a role she held until 2016. The same year, she participated for the first time in the Cannes Film Festival. For the occasion she wore a Roberto Cavalli dress.

In 2013 she was included in the “New Icons” list of H&M. Moreover she became the first Asian model to make it to the Forbes list of the highest paid models in the world, making it into the top-five. Her name also reappeared in the following year’s ranking. In 2013 Liu Wen was included in the Top 50 Models Women List of models.com. As of 2014, the website called her a super model, the first Asian model to achieve this title. In 2014 she took part in the 66th Cannes Film Festival wearing a dress by Elie Saab.

Liu Wen has many followers on Weibo (more than 26 million) and more than 5 million on Instagram. Due to her enormous fame on the web, Vogue America defined her as one of the most influential digital voices in the fashion industry. In addition to backstage photos and photo shoots, Liu also shares moments and images from her travels and free time. At the moment, she is the Asian model with the largest audience on the web.

In October 2014, she was the first person in the world to publicly wear an Apple Watch.

THE SHOW BUSINESS

In 2015 she appeared in the reality show “Let’s Fall in Love”. In September 2018, she participated in the China Central Radio and Television autumn festival. The following year, she participated in the second season of the reality show “Adventure Life”, produced by Tencent. On the 8th of March 2021, the first Barbie model looking like her was produced. The Barbie’s dress is the same that Liu Wen wore at the New York Met Gala in 2014. In April she participated in the variety show “Mom, you are so beautiful” and she became the coach of the “Supermodel training camp”.

LIU WEN: PERSONAL LIFE

Liu Wen did not only reach records in the Forbes and models.com rankings, she also reversed the concept of beauty that exists in China. In an interview for Vogue, Liu confessed that due to her small eyes and her height, she didn’t always meet the aesthetic standards of her homeland. On the other hand, she also talked about the change in Chinese beauty standards, derived from the influences of the beauty standards of the international fashion industry, which have changed some of the most traditional visions of the country.
