Leggings

The idea of covering the ankle and the lower part of the leg was common in the Middle Ages as a means of keeping warm. The area covered can range from the foot up to the hip, to the thigh or simply up to the knee. Leggings are often fastened around the top of the foot. The practice of dressing legs was used for children and teenagers in the early 1900s, when spats were all the rage. During the 1980s, leggings returned to fashion, especially with leg warmers inspired by the world of ballet. Black was the prevalent color, but they also came in paler shades and different patterns.
