Van den Akker, Koos
KOOS VAN DEN AKKER WAS A DESIGNER OF DUTCH ORIGIN. FAMOUS FOR PATCHWORK CLOTHES
Van Den Akker (1939) created clothes with overlapping fabrics, inserts and varied patterns. In fact, he was named the ‘master of collage couture’. After studying at the Academy in The Hague, his home town, he moved to Paris where he was employed by the Maison Dior. Back in Holland, he opened a boutique but decided to try the American adventure. The year was 1968. His embroidered fabrics were so successful that, in a short time, he managed to open several shops in Manhattan, creating a ready-to-wear brand in 1971. His clientele grew to include Glenn Close, Magic Johnson, Chita Rivera, Brooke Shields, Barbara Walters and Josephine Premice.
The great personality of his creations, particularly in collage dresses, are the basis of his success. He specialises above all in knitwear. In recent years, he has downsized but still has his own boutique in Greenwich Village.
