Jean-Louis Scherrer (1936-2013): French fashion designer

Fallece el francés Jean-Louis Scherrer, mítico diseñador de la Alta Costura

Jean-Louis Scherrer was born in Lyon. His style is understated. His luxury prêt-à-porter is characterized by the use of refined velvets but also by coats finished in leather and suede. He was also inspired by the Orient, making Mongol or Chinese-style capes and cloaks in the 1980s. He chooses fashion as a professional alternative to classical dance which he had been forced to abandon due to an accident. He hires him Dior , a year before he died. He also collaborates with the successor Saint Laurent . After three years with Féraud, he created his own brand in 1962. His talent scout is Julia Trissel, buyer for the American warehouse Bergdof Goodman. He enjoys a raise in ’76, four years later he wins the Dé d’Or, still has a decade of success. His path is full of ups and downs due to continuous changes of ownership of the company he started.

In 1992, it had to be sold to the Japanese Seibu Group which entrusted the line, first, to Erik Mortensen, then to Bernard Perrys. In 1997, the maison was bought by the French company EK Finance which chose the stylist Stéphane Rolland. Mouffarige and Franµois Barthes found the France Luxury Group which bought Scherrer together with other brands. Stephane Rolland launches the men’s line and focuses on the brand’s high fashion. Ritu Beri is chosen by the France Luxury Group to design Scherrer’s prêt-à-porter . Ritu Beri leaves the Group. The Scherrer fashion house now belongs to the Alliance Designers Group owned by Alain Duménil.

He died in 2013 at the age of 78.
