Isetan

Isetan is a Japanese department store born in 1886.

History

Isetan is a Japanese company of department stores. In fashion it follows the market politics of focusing on young people with the brands Moschino, Donna Karan, Cerruti, and Montana. Since 1991 it has also had his C’est Magnifique line. Established in 1886 in Tokyo as a kimono boutique, it developed in the 1930s. In 1989 it arrived in the USA thanks to a joint venture with Barney’s. It has 15 branch stores all over the world.

In 2001 agreements were signed to sell in Ado stores its brands, including the popular womenswear New’s Square Casual line. Later it acquired Iwataya, leader group in Kyushu’s department stores, and revamped the chain.

In 2002 the department store expanded the Ado projects with the New’s Square Handbag bags’ collection: it was launched in August 2001 and it sold 2,5 billion yen. In August 2007 it was announced the fusion between Isetan and Mitsukoshi, a Japanese department store. On 1st April 2008 Isetan and Mitsukoshi became a unique company named Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd, a holding directed by Nobukazu Muto, Hiroshi Onishi and Toshiniko Sugie.

In 2016, in Japanese department stores, sales fell decreased of 6.000 billion yen (49,7 billion euros), while in 2020 there was a net decrease of 41,8 billion yen (around 382 million dollars), concerning the fiscal year concluded on 31st March.
