Helmut Lang (1956) is an Austrian designer, born in Vienna. His fashion is as understated as he is. He designed his first clothes at a very young age.

In 1977 he opened a boutique in Vienna of custom-made clothing. His designs contain the spirit of the avant-garde artistic and cultural movement to which he belongs, the Wiener Moderne. In 1986 he made his Paris début with a prêt-à-porter line. The following year, his first men’s collection was very successful.

He regularly designed more lines: shoes (1990), jeans (1994), accessories (1995), shirts (1997), and ties (1998). The opening of his boutiques marked the steps of his success: Monaco (1995), Milan (1996), New York (1997), and Hong Kong and London (1998).

Listed among the so-called minimalist designers, he is able to give his simplistic creations an artistic touch: the red of a huge stripe that characterizes a simple sweater; and the raw cut tunic in tulle that covers the dress. The use and unusual matching of materials (silk and plastic, for example) support his apparent minimalism.

His shows, to which only a few selected names are invited, have no fuss or spectacle: no catwalks and his models are almost without make-up and walk quickly on low heels. In the late 1990s, his griffe was acquired by Prada.
In 2002, the Prada Group purchased 51% of Helmut Lang. Turnover reached €41.8 million, Then, in 2004, Prada bought out the entire company.
In May 2005, an announcement was made that the brand would be suspended while waiting for an offer to buy it.
