Harper’s Bazaar

Harper’s Bazaar, American fashion monthly magazine

Harper’s Bazaar is an American fashion monthly. It is the competitor of Vogue, from which it has often stolen away the best talents such as the photographer, De Meyer, and the journalist Carmel Snow. She coined the phrase New Look for Dior‘s first Collection in 1946. In 1932 Snow became the top name and innovator of the magazine.

The monthly was established in 1867 by Fletcher Harper. Initially it was a weekly magazine and remained that way until 1901, when sales problems advised its transformation into a monthly. This did not help the magazine because it was acquired 1913 by William Randolph Hearst, already a highly successful publisher. He immediately set up the magazine as Vogue’s competitor thanks to strategist hirings, exclusives (a ten-year contract with the illustrator, Erté), and big names. In 1929, Hearst added a second ‘a’ to the word Bazar. From that moment on, the review took off.

A few years later, the magazine’s success was helped by the revolution of graphics studied by Alexey Brodovitch and his discoveries of talented photographers (from Man Ray to Martin Munkacsi and Richard Avedon). His artistic tastes led him to collaborate with Couteau, Dalì, and Chagall as well as many other artists. The monthly has helped many people to grow professionally, such as Diana Vreeland (on the editorial staff from 1936 and made director of Vogue in 1962) and photographers such as Bob Richardson and Irving Penn. The last great director was Liz Tiberis, who passed away in 1999. The magazine has many foreign editions.

Harper’s Bazaar in the 2000s

In May 2001 Glenda Bailey became Editor-in-Chief of the magazine. She came from rich experience in Italy as a designer and has worked for American edition of Marie Claire, which has become the bestselling American fashion magazine in just five years: a record in the quickest increase in circulation.
Stephen Gan, collaborator of Harper’s Bazaar, received the fashion award in the Creative Visionary category. This 40th edition of the CFDA’s award maintained a low profile. It was held in the New York Public Library where it began.
The magazine is published in 18 countries, among which Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey, Hong Kong, and the Czech Republic.

Nowadays the magazine is published in 32 countries, among which the online magazine Harper’s Bazaar Italia. For a short period in Italy it has been sold a male versione Harper’s Bazaar Uomo
