Winnie Harlow, symbol of inclusiveness, is one of the most influential models of the new millennium, also thanks to the naturalness with which she approaches the world and its diversity. We would like to point out how much her vitiligo has influenced her popularity. The 2020s aimed, at least in the fashion context, and with too much simplicity, at inclusion. A goal set far and wide in the world of fashion biz as evidenced by the various initiatives from Milan to New York, from Paris to London.
Harlow was diagnosed with vitiligo at the age of four. The model of Jamaican origins has never hidden her complicated childhood, spent having to defend herself (and suffer) due to some bullies who marked her skin defect.
“I am aware that I am considered an example of changing times, and tomorrow I think my walking the fashion catwalks will be talked about in the same way that the first black models, who debuted years ago, are remembered today. But I have not become famous for this, for my skin. I am not a trend, I deserve success because I have always considered myself the entrepreneur of myself” stated the model.
The debut in the fashion world
After some modeling jobs in Toronto (following an interview with photographer Shannon Boodram), to which she alternated activities as a lingerie saleswoman and telemarketing operator, she participated in the America’s Next Top Model show in 2014 arriving among the finalists. Tyra Banks discovered her on Instagram. In New York she was hired by the Women Model Management to which she owes her success.
She started her modeling work as a Victoria’s Secret angel and became the face of Tommy Hilfiger, working together with his colleague Gigi Hadid who also created a capsule collection TOMMYXGIGI for the American brand. Then she walked the catwalk for Philipp Plein, Byblos, Jean Paul Gaultier, H&M x Moschino, Desigual and Diesel. She also posed for international magazines such as Vogue and I-D.
