Gatto

Legendary shoemaker in Rome, famous among dandies for its custom made shoes. It was established in 1912 by Angelo Gatto, a Sicilian artisan from Noto, who learned the job at a young age and emigrated to England and France in order to deepen his knowledge of the craft. Since that time, Gatto shoes have distinguished themselves for their tapered and proportionate line, the quality of the skins (calfskin from France and Germany, leather from Italy) and the perfection of the stitching. In 1934 the workshop added to its resume the honor of being a supplier to the Royal House. Right after World War II, Gatto was joined by his grandson Giuseppe. The brand continued to be successful. When Angelo died in 1974, Giuseppe started a partnership with Gaetano Vastola, an assistant artisan who had been hired in 1953. In 1993, when Giuseppe died, his position was taken by his son Enzo who, together with Vastola, maintained the high reputation of the brand. They have about one thousand clients all over the world. Gatto has served, or serves, among others, the Savoy family, Constantine of Greece, Boris of Bulgaria, Faruk of Egypt, Tyrone Power, Alain Delon, Piero Sanjust, Gianni Agnelli, and Marco Tronchetti Provera.
