EMILY WILKENS (1920-2000): AMERICAN FASHION DESIGNER

Emily Wilkens was an American fashion designer. She invented the teenage style for American girls. An invention that preceded the appearance of rock’n’roll and the James Dean films, and which stemmed from her particular sensitivity in capturing the moods and needs of the young people of the time.

Her main objective was to demonstrate to the fashion world that young girls’ wardrobes should be conceived and designed with the same care as their mothers’. Especially as the times and wealth heralded the explosion of youthful consumerism.
