Canal

Nina Canal (1953) was a painter of fabric. A nomadic artist is inspired by the world’s tribes, she is also a successful rock musician with the group Ut. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, she moved to London in the 1960s. She studied first at the Camberwell School of Art, and then at the Hornsey College of Art. In 1976, after graduation, she painted fabrics for the designer Porter. In New York, she created the brand Nika and, together with other young designers, formed the Under Designer Group. During the 1980s she was in London, working under the pseudonym King Cobra. From 1990 to 1998 she was in Los Angeles, where she painted scarves under her own name. She sells her creations to the most important international boutiques. Since 1998 she has lived in London and Paris, producing her own line of scarves, and working with fashion designers such as Jerome L’Huillier and Paul Smith.
