PERSONAL LIFE OF THE STYLIST

The fashion designer Angel Chen, aka Anqi Chen, is originally from the city of Shenzhen in China and currently lives in Shanghai. 

Her parents, both gifted with great creativity, worked for a company specializing in the production of paints.  The stimulating environment in which she grew up has allowed her to develop a deep intuition and knowledge of colours since she was a child.

During middle school, she met John Galliano at a fashion newsroom.  She was immediately overwhelmed by his eccentric style and design, which inspired her for her future works.

She began his career at 17, enrolling in the Fashion Design degree course at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College in London.

THE DEBUT

While studying abroad, Anqi Chen worked as an intern at famous fashion companies such as Marchesa, Vera Wang and Alexander Wang. After graduating from Central Saint Martins College, she was named one of five designers worthy of attention by i-D magazine. In 2014 she launched her eponymous brand Angel Chen in Shanghai. 

Chen Anqi, who was born in Shenzhen and lives in the UK, has been subject to the collision between Chinese and Western cultures and has incorporated this dualism into her creations. She loves to use different textures of traditional fabrics and embroideries to mix unique designs rich in oriental traditions and contemporary colours.  Weaving and embroidery mixed with materials such as polyester, silk, cotton, plastic and metals are among her favourite techniques.

Angel Chen launched her first spring and summer collection “The Rite of Spring” in 2015. A collection inspired by the vigorous growth of all things. Thanks to the use of bold colours and eccentric weaving she won the coveted “Fashion Scout Ones to Watch” award.

COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER BRANDS

Since 2017, Angel Chen has had a permanent presence on the official Milan Fashion Week calendar and boasts collaborations with well-known Western brands such as H&M, Adidas Originals, McDonald’s, Canada Goose and Swarovski. 

It is also worth mentioning the capsule collection in collaboration with the beauty brand M.A.C Cosmetics, released in 2019. The foundation and the two lipsticks come in a packaging that matches the personal style of the designer Chen Anqi. The main colours are shades of red, traditionally associated with China. palette also includes bright yellow, blue and fluorescent colours. Product design was inspired by the words “red makeup” found in the “Ballad of Mulan“. Each product in the collection, from lipstick to blush, has been designed to bring vitality and allow every woman who wears it to feel like a “goddess”.

In the co-branding collections, the basic principle of Anqi Chen is based on maintaining the characteristics of the brand, using bold colours with a Chinese charm. 

In 2021, Angel Chen successfully entered the global market and became one of the most influential young Chinese fashion brands. Her creations are featured in many stores in China and on about a hundred internationally renowned e-commerce platforms, including Lane Crawford, NET-A-PORTER, Galeries Lafayette,Selfridges, Luisaviaroma  and Urban Outfitters.
