Aigrette

Tuft of feathers which adorns the head of some birds, including the egret. It was used to embellish hats, on Empire-style dresses, and put in a lady’s chignon in the late 19th century. It was back in fashion during the Art Deco period and used as a hat decoration during the 1940s. On stage it adorned the dresses and heads of theater actresses and cafe singers. The designers called it spray.
