VIA DE ‘CALZAIUOLI IS THE HEART OF THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF FLORENCE: IT GOES FROM PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA TO PIAZZA DUOMO

The name Via de ‘Calzaiuoli derives from the shoemakers, artisans and merchants of cloth stockings with soles that were popular among the fashionable young people of Florence from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Already in the Middle Ages the street was the queen of city commerce. It is overlooked by monuments of the importance of Orsanmichele, the 13th century granary then transformed into a church, the most Florentine monument in Florence as it was baptized for its mixed civil and religious character.

Over the centuries

Over the centuries, the street, pedestrianized and cleared of cars, maintained its vocation as a shopping centre. It has therefore become the main passage for tourists and city shopping, in a cheerful but also chaotic mix of styles ranging from the trendy youth shops, to the souvenir shops, to luxury jewelers.
