Xuly

BÍt (1962). Designer, born in Bamako Badian in Mali. His real name is Lamine Kouyate, but he has chosen this pseudonym for his label, which in the language of Mali means “he who opens his eyes, whose glance pierces appearances.” He left Mali at the age of 14 to move first to Argentina and then to France, where he started to study architecture, but he abandoned his studies in favor of fashion. He founded the Funkin Fashion Factory in 1989 and presented his first collection of clothing in 1990. His most characteristic feature is his ability to recycle old clothes, creating new lines from old styles. “Just like the African tradition,” he says, “where earrings are made from old tin cans.” He opened a boutique in the Forum des Halles in Paris in 1996, and another one in Marseilles in 1998. He designed some of the costumes for the 1998 World Cup opening ceremony in the Stadium of France.
